Vision changes can include increased sensitivity to horizontal and vertical lines. Test for seeing vertical lines in vision accuracy: Amsler Grids to check for symptoms and disease progressionĪmsler grids are sometimes given to patients once macular degeneration is diagnosed to check for symptoms at home. This leakage can cause more severe visual distortion, blind spots, and even permanent central vision loss. However, dry macular degeneration may progress to wet MD, in which the blood vessels underneath the macula start leaking fluid and blood into the retina. Most people with MD have the dry form, causing yellow deposits, known as drusen, on the macula.

AMSLER GRID PROFESSIONAL
It is important to keep up with routine eye exams, because your eye care professional is likely to see signs of macular degeneration before you begin experiencing symptoms. Macular degeneration (also know as age-related macular degeneration) is an eye disease that causes vision loss in the center of the field of vision due to retinal deterioration. Macular degeneration symptoms are important to be aware of as we age. Is it more blurred than usual? Do the lines appear more wavy than usual? Are missing areas of vision larger than usual? If this is the case, early action and prompt treatment are crucial to saving your sight.Seeing vertical lines in vision as wavy, when they should appear straight, is a possible sign of macular degeneration. It’s important to note that if you have already been diagnosed with AMD, you’ll be monitoring for changes in what you usually see. You must get prompt treatment to save your sight. Contact your eye health professional immediately. If you see wavy, broken or distorted lines, or blurred or missing areas of vision you may be displaying symptoms of AMD. Cover one eye with your hand and focus on the centre dot with your uncovered eye. Hold the grid at your normal reading distance, that’s usually about 30cm from your face, in a well-lit room. If you use reading glasses, you should wear them when using an Amsler grid. That’s because the eye with the better vision will compensate for the lack of vision in the eye with AMD. So, for example, if you have age-related macular degeneration in one eye only, you may not realise it. This allows potential issues to be identified in each individual eye. When using an Amsler grid, it is important that you test one eye at a time.
